New pricing model in view

June 23rd, 2009

Due to the frankly surprising success of this ad hoc discount, we were brought to fundamentally reconsider our pricing policy for ForkLift. We don’t want to rush this decision, so we will extend this current discount for an extra week, until we’re prepared to come out with our new pricing model.

This means there’s still one week left of this great deal.

I’ll repeat my previous question: And what for those who bought a license just a few days before the discount was announced? – or will this be addressed in the new model?

    @Bramus!
First, thank you for having supported ForkLift with the purchase of a full price license. We truly appreciate.
Still, to answer the first part of your question – well, it is the nature of specials that one user will pay less for the same product as another one, just because of a difference in the time between the two purchases.

But to answer your second question, yes, we are in deep meditation about questions of pricing, licensing policy and such, trying to work out a set of solutions that are fair to everybody and no one feels ripped off.

i’m pretty sure i paid $20 ages ago for forklift, which seemed like an incredible deal at the time and i bought it in a heartbeat. but to be honest, i’d have a difficult time coughing up $50 for it, even though i use it to death. $30, absolutely. $40 maybe. $50 is what i paid for TextMate (also ages ago) which seems to be a common reference point to what to pay for quality, must-have software. i’m certainly not saying it isn’t *worth* $50, far from it, but $30 or $35 seems like a sweet spot that would appeal to many more folks.

I agree on the ~35 USD pricing

And I hope the version 2.0 upgrade would be as cheap as this discount (9.95), for that pricing, a pre-order about 3-4 months in advance would be fair enough

Wow, glad I came back to check on things. I was holding out for a version with column view but at $10, this is a no-brainer. And I agree with Nate & Chriswan, ~$30 for the app and $10 for major upgrades sounds good to me. The previous price really made me second guess the purchase especially when comparing to swiss-army pathfinder. And now that it looks like there aren’t any major changes to the Snow Leopard finder, this looks like an even more attractive deal.

Still, please come out with column view. :)

  6. Flow is $30, Transmit is $30. Forklift is better than both of them, but people probably aren’t going to buy it if it’s priced much higher. $30 would be a fantastic price, but if it were $25, it would probably sell a lot better than Flow or Transmit. Then, $10 for major updates.

So basically, my recommendation is $25-35. 30 is probably best, since it goes with the rest of the clients available.

  7. Also, for those who bought the app before the pricing change (and this special), free upgrade to 2.0 when it comes out instead of $10 should be a nice enough gesture to those who supported the app in its earlier days.

Wow! Great sale. I’m out in 3rd world Africa at the moment but I looked up your blog on my iPhone and caught the sale just in time! Thanks.

Thanks for the advice guys. Your feedback reinforces our own feeling that 44.95 might have been a bit too much. It didn’t feel too much when we upped our price, but that was when the dollar was at its lowest, and yes, before the economic “crisis”, or whatever the politically correct term is for it nowadays.

From your comments it looks like our opinions are pretty close on what can be considered as the software consumer’s ’sweet spot’. So, thanks for these pointers, and I hope we’ll give everyone a nice surprise tomorrow…

$30 (and $15 for students) is a great price for Forklift.

BTW, IMO Flow & Transmit are overpriced.

  11. Ed Palma says:

Count my purchase as an investment in single pane column view ;)
