We are happy to announce the second beta with tons of fixes and new features. Although we’ve promised you one killer feature, there turned out to be two, hope you don’t mind. :)

The following two videos give you a glimpse of what they are.

holy smokes, you guys rule the school! tab pane switching, remote editing, type-ahead.. !! and the Delete App feature is something i’d never think of but is a great idea…

  2. diego says:

    Great!
Nate said it all, this is getting serious :)
    good job!! :D

  3. David says:

Excellent tool. You’ve come up with a truly sensational, useful app. Congrats.

  4. chri says:

    Great Job!
I use and test ForkLift now since 2-3 weeks and i can not image to work without it on my Mac. Keep on … grear app.

  5. Migro says:

I hope all my wishes will come true so fast :)
Very nice new features, it seems you don’t waste your time.
The appzapper tool is very handy and works great.
    Keep up the good work!!

    Thanks,
    Migro

  6. Ax says:

    Very-very great program!
Keep up the good work, its a real miracle!

  7. MG says:

    Hello,
Wonderful job on forklift so far. Good to see a few suggestions being implemented quickly :) I’ve got some smaller GUI suggestions for you all, but also a few larger more serious things that haven’t quite been done right in a file manager before. I also have implementation suggestions for the above (I”m a cocoa dev). Is there an email somewhere I could contact you at? You can also email me at my address (you should have it from this post).

  8. AzRAeL says:

WOHA! – NOW it rocks! great work!

  9. Jacques Lema says:

Excellent job. This is looking more and more like the perfect thing. I’ll be buying this as soon as you announce pricing! (assuming it’s not 200$ :-) )

  10. A-Dub says:

Hi there, I noticed that you don’t have any loc’ed versions so far and wondered if this is planned or if someone could offer themselves to localize your app. For me it would be much nicer to have a German app on a German OS running.

  11. Rodney says:

I am LOVING this app and it’s quickly becoming one I canNOT live without. I am curious as to whether you folks intend to offer some sort of advance sale pricing, as a little incentive to buy early and often. Conversely, I’d love to know what kind of money I’ll be having to save up to buy the 1.0 release. :) Thanks for a great app and keep up the great work.

  12. Bendis says:

Great improvements so far. Thank you implementing some of the suggestions already.

  13. thpaisan says:

Really impress on this feature….keep going

  14. Fantastic product. I recently converted to the Mac from “the dark side”… your product actually has helped that transition a ton. When can we buy it?!? Great job guys.

  15. The team says:

    Guys,

The price will be very fair and you can buy it soon.

  16. mr.soka says:

Will it be discounted for hungarians? ;)

  17. The team says:

We give a 99% discount for Eskimos but you have to prove it by sending a picture of you kissing a seal ;)

  18. mr.soka says:

That’s no problem acutally ;P I’m a hungarian who lives up north, nearly next to the North Pole ;)

  19. dan says:

    hi,

    nice update, thanks.

please think about the following for future versions:
    * a link saying “..” for the parent directory on top of directory listings
    * confirm dialogues for delete and copy operations
    * a shortcut and pop-up window for quick access to favourites when sidebar is disabled or keyboard-only access is preferred – as I do… :)
    * command / button for ftp-disconnect when sidebar is disabled
    * select / unselect function should be possible by using spacebar
    * drawe should follow page-down or page-up commands
    * drawer should focus new file / directory when created
    * config option for listing font size
    * internal viewer (image files at least)
    * separated “view hidden files” for ftp and local environment

    just for your inspiration…! :)

    many thanks

  20. Robert says:

Hi, Love Forklift! I’d like to add a request for spring loaded folders (I think that’s what it’s called when you hold over a folder and then it opens. Very useful when moving things from one panel to another.

  21. Ian says:

+100 to most of Dan’s suggestions, especially “..” parent link and spacebar for selection :bribe:

Forklift currently has buggy half-support for smart folders – it would be great that this excellent feature of Tiger gets better support!

Add a dropbox (like Path finder) for stacking files up from disparate directories with ease.

:unicum: for your hard work :)

  22. Drakkul says:

You need translations? Russian for example :)

  23. dan says:

    hi,
when you are up to a new version please think about giving us options to configure date and time columns.

I would love to have it in format “DD.MM.YYYY HH:MM” as default; the finder style (as it is now, dynamically) could be the alternative for others to select…

    Thx.

  24. Donald van de Weyer says:

Very nice indeed! I think I now can give up dreaming about a Mac version of Total Commander. You got me with commander keybindings. :-)

If you need ideas on what to bring to ForkLift try have a look at Total Commander for Windows (http://www.ghisler.com/) and try to implement some of the niceties of Path Finder (http://www.cocoatech.com/).

    Thanks!

    Donald

  25. Maciek says:

Ok, I am shocked with quality of this beta2 release…!

I am definitely going to buy this one little gem as soon as it will be oficially available.

    Now my wishlist :)
    - “..” parent link
    - making selections with spacebar
    - multiple tabs per pane! (my file browsing needs are pretty weird, so 2 panes are not enough hehe)

Enough for now, keep up good work!!!

  26. aleks says:

    loving forklift.

one thing: why can’t i move files sometimes? i will just hear a sound effect and nothing is moved. this happens when i want to move files from my local hd to an external usb hd. i can copy and delete them without problems, so why can’t i move them?

  27. David James says:

    Woo Hoo!

I’ve been looking for a solid dual-pane file manager and ForkLift is AWESOME!

I look forward to you first non-beta release!

    Dave

  28. Jack says:

    Me likes! Me likes!

You guys rock! This program is great! Keep up the good work!

    -Jack

  29. Alex says:

    Fantastic App!
Since i switched i was searching for something similar to Totalcommander…
When i discovered ForkLift and tested it for 5 mins i just thought,
    “WOW!”
I’ll definitely gonna buy when its out :D

    You guys rule!

    best regards,
    ~Alex

  30. Bubber says:

    Hi guys,

ForkLift rocks, I can’t leave without it now !!!!!!

You made it to Diggs’s main page: http://macapper.com/2007/05/09/exclusive-interview-a-surprise-from-binarynights/

    Keep up the good work!

  31. msbob says:

    Multiple columns, not just two.

Saved views or Quick views like the Apple’s icon, list, and column view. cmd+1, cmd+2, cmd+3, etc. for saved views like single column with lots of details and siebars open, another view with minimal buttons and windows expanded to see more data, using a smaller font, three or four column views, stacked view.

If you allow multiple columns or rows, a way to combine open browsers into one – this could be limited to the a certain number of columns/rows.

I want my triangles. Hierarchical view within a column.

I’d like to see an “arrange windows” option under Window, to stack multiple windows vertically, or fill screen, instead of layered. Useful when more than one browser is open.

Stack windows as an option in addition to side-by side.

File path collector. I used “File Path” to grab the full path name while in the apple finder. This is a useful feature that should be too difficult to code.

Detailed copy window: It’s annoying that a locked file can stall a big file copy in the apple finder. If the process could continue, but log the item and path of the file(s) that couldn’t be copied, it would streamline things immensely. This should have been in Mac OS as early as OS 7, but I still haven’t seen it. Your app is well suited to add this.

All browser windows are titled “Forklift” – useless when selecting under Window, or rolling over in expose, or glancing at a window title behind the front window. Not sure what would be better, maybe the title of the two top-level folders, Network :: G4 Tower or Applications :: Bob’s Data.

Permission modification on par with BatChmod. That app is amazingly fast and just works, while Apple’s apply permission’s doesn’t and is very slow.

  32. Imre Fazekas says:

Great and wonderfull app! Congratulations guys!

I really appreciate a feature like some backup function.
For example: creating symlinks for folders in a ‘normal’ backup folder, and when i copy something in this backup folder it delegates the copy operation to the symlinks’ folders. Some kind a multiple copy. It’s a little thing i know and far away from a file manager, but would be usefull for my programming work. i don’t like backup solutions, too complicated apps…

  33. Imre Fazekas says:

and just a little request: a hotkey binding?
like in quicksilver and so on. pressing the hotkey the app is starting or if it is started show it’s main window.

  34. KubaMan says:

t’s a cheap rip-off of the original Norton Commander. Nothing new here!

  35. yeah says:

Wow, you rock! This file manager is almost perfect for me right off the bat. Expect feature requests soon as I find the bits that could be tweaked a little (filter without spotlight by name in the current folder would be nice).

To the Norton Commander rip-off guy – by your logic you are a rip off of a troll because you both post useless comments. You perform the same function.

  36. yeah says:

You should be able to right click on the favorites in the left pane to set a hot-key or even if you press command+shift+t when adding a favorite it prompts you for a hot key to use.

  37. yeah says:

I should be able to press command+z for undo when I accidentally delete the wrong item with command+backspace.

  38. yeah says:

The size field of folders in the info pane should automatically update in a low-priority thread with an icon (tick perhaps) appearing next to the size when it’s done to show me it’s finished. Not sure if it would work nicely even with a low priority thread but if it does it would be nice.

  39. yeah says:

BTW this is still by far the ultimate OS X file manager you are a legend for making this.

  40. yeah says:

There is no need for the volumes to appear twice in the select boxes above each pane but it might be nice if the favorites were in there. Is there a hotkey to jump to this box? Might mitigate the need for all my favorite hotkeys…

  41. yeah says:

Would it be possible to add different hotkeys for copy and move in different directions? I know this one is probably not going to happen but it would be nice if I could use command+shift+right to move files to right pane and command+shift+left to the left pane… Perhaps just allow multiple hotkey assigns to a feature?

  42. yeah says:

I’m reorganizing over a Terabyte of data here so hope you don’t mind all these feature comments :)

  43. yeah says:

Plug-in API maybe even scriptable with ruby or python?

  44. yeah says:

When I decend into an archive inside of another archive pressing the go to containing folder hot key takes me to the forklift caches directory – intuitively I would expect it to take me back to the containing archive.

  45. yeah says:

PAR2 support? Or just the plug-in API so I can add wacky features like that myself…

  46. yeah says:

Would be cool if the move/copy window remembered it’s last position because every time it opens one I drag it onto a different monitor.

  47. yeah says:

Move to should work across volumes.

  48. yeah says:

It crashed and lost most of my hotkeys and two of my favorites when it did so. I wasn’t doing anything specific I can remember but did send the bug report
