Public Service Announcement – ForkLift 1.5b2 is released

February 4th, 2008

Test Drivers Welcome!

Significant work has been carried out here since the first beta release, and thanks to an abundance of input, we have managed to track down and fix many of the bugs.

This is where we want to say: Thank You!
for your help in these past two weeks, for the friendly support, the thorough bug reports, and quick response when we needed you to track down a particluar pest.

If you stay with us with the same energy until February 29, when the beta period will end and the final version is released, I think we’ll get a chance to feel very satisfied with the job we’ve done:)

Now you can have the goodies: download ForkLift 1.5b2

READ ON!!!

List of fixes in ForkLift 1.5b2

- hacked the FTP engine to now allow multiple parallel actions on the same FTP server, so it is now possible to browse, copy/move files while another copy operation is ongoing
- condensing the many crash reports that you’ve sent, we’ve managed to track and fix some core stability issues, ForkLift should be now free of these random crashes
- the integrated QuickLook will now let you browse between selected files using the cursors
- read/write fixed on European S3 buckets
- fixed the bug that caused a crash during remote edit
- fixed the memory leak
- fixed bug in the handling of ssh public keys with passphrase
- fixed refresh on panel views
- fixed crash hazard found in remote file copy actions
- copied/moved symlinks are now displayed properly with the symlink name instead of the original file name
- setting the S3 Bucket ACL now works
- fixed crash error on S3 object names beginning with /
- fixed SFTP connection bug where login fails with passwords containing the characters % or $
- we’ve improved shared computer handling, but there is still some work to be done here
- SFTP OWNER / GROUP data is displayed correctly
- changing permissions in the GET Info panel now works
- size column in the panel is now aligned to the right
- the show/hide sidebar menu command didn’t do anything useful, so we removed it
- the default toolbar icon set was extended
- SHOW/HIDE info view menu item now displays correct status
- fixed unresponsive stop button on replace activity windows
- the edit menu command will now work on local folders (e.g. pages documents)
- fixed kind string error on remote folders
- increased contrast for the Back/Forward navigation buttons
- fixed bug where PDF files were stuck in the Trash after previewing them in ForkLift

We feel this release is already much closer to where we want to be in terms of stability and reliability, though there are some problems we already know of, and more of which we know nothing, and count on you to run into them.
As an instance to known problems – renaming by double-clicking the file/folder in the panel caused unexpected behaviors, so we
have decided to remove the feature for the moment, and take it back to the lab.

I expect we’ll be spending a lot of time in the BinaryNights Beta Testing and Fast Response Action Command Center in the next couple of weeks, so see you all there.

Thank you for your attention. Over

  1. Loyd Craft says:

    Leopard look and feel was a definite positive move..

    Using it after being used to 10.5’s finder was causing some cognitive dissonance.. I’ll see if I can break anything.

  2. Tutor says:

    I try to like Forklift, but the tab implementation confuses me. Pretty please, implement individual tabs for both panes.

    Lower info pane shows no info with multiple objects selected.
    Favorites implementation needs mouse. A “Go to Favorites” would be nice.
    Info window doesn’t show number of objects in folders.

    Good progress, keep it up.

  3. Rex says:

    I cant run this new beta in my iBook G4 running OS X 10.4.11. Why?

  4. csaba@binarynights.com says:

    @Loyd – switching the default keyboard shortcut set to Finder’s in Preferences might alleviate some of the cognitive dissonance you experience. Try it, and let us know your experiences!

    @Tudor
    Thanks for the useful comments – we’ll see what we can do.

    @Rex – it’s been said in earlier posts, though not here yet, that the 1.5 release of ForkLift is Leopard only. The reasons for this have also been discussed, but in a nutshell, it is simply because we cannot afford the resources to carry two parallel versions.
    Still, the Tiger version has the same feature set as 1.5, except the Leopard-specific stuff, such as QuickLook.

    A nice day to all

  5. Just thought I’d let you guys know that I am in love with ForkLift! I’m a new switcher from Windows, and I couldn’t have found a better FTP application! I thought I was going to have to pay a ton of money for something like Transmit.

    Good thing you were part of the MacUpdate Promo! Otherwise I would have bought Transmit and never gotten to use ForkLift.

  6. Just noticed today there was a 1.5 beta. Congratulations this one really feels good. The group features in the favorites was definitely preventing me from considering dropping Transmit. Where the “import favorites from Transmit” option? :-)

    The only thing (I can think of) I still miss from Total Commander or DirectoryOpus was the ability to add custom buttons / right-click menus with command line tools (eg. pngcrush, advzip or some other script).

    @Tutor
    I am perfectly happy with the tabs association two panes (that’s the goal in my opinion). Of course an option to have both wouldn’t hurt.

    Keep up the great work!

  7. Oooh.. I hadn’t noticed the sync browsing button. That’s absolutely awesome.. I can’t tell you how many times I have felt like a monkey selecting the folders on each side twice.

    To make this perfect. The FTP shortcuts could have a default local path though (and open local on left panel and FTP in right panel).

  8. Metalcry says:

    This new beta looks even better. I hope you add that option to make that “overwrite confirmation” dissapear in case we want to (specially during ftp transactions) always overwrite files.

    Gratz for such a great job guys.

  9. HeroP says:

    I do like betatesting (most recent version) FL a lot. But why is Quick-Look NOT working on remote folders?
    Did I just miss something? No matter what rights I provide for the File( like PDF, GIF, JPEG or TXT), no luck. Even if I provide 777 to the file with FL, no way.
    Can anybody help me out here?

    Have a nice day…

  10. peter says:

    I totally agree with Santiago,

    Please, please please pleeeease implement a local AND remote path option inside favorites.
    This is so usefull for FTP work, but it could also definatly benefit local file operations.
    i.e. a favorite called “itunes”. When I click this favorite, it could load my local music folder in the left pane, and my second mac’s music folder in the other pane. This to allow to compare both directories. Sync browsing would work perfect from there… but pleasepleasepleaseplease implement a “left” and “right” pane path preference for favorites, both locally and remote (ftp)

    please ?

  11. Ian says:

    Remembering pairs of panes would be great, and also the ability to save sets of tab!. Opera has a session saver, where the “current state” is saved as a set. So you can have one Forklift window with two panes and that would be saved, or if you had 3 tabs open then the whole tab set would be saved. That would make favorites awesomely powerful (dual pane favorites open in a new tab in the current window, tab sets open a new window), and shouldn’t be too hard to implement.

  12. Oli says:

    @Santiago
    Please help me. How works Sync Browsing?
    If I choose this the two panels not work parallel.
    Thanks
    Oli

  13. Goran says:

    When authentication dialog appears (when trying to remove files/folders that requiring admin permissions) it should be focused and password field should have focus. Right now, dialog is not focused, and i need to use mouse to select it.

    Also, please implement two separate tab holders (for each file browser one), because, as it is right now, it is very confusing. If you think that’s not necessary or wrong, please at least implement options, so users can adjust tab behavior according their preference.

    Thanks.

    Forklift made great leap from 1.0.x, 1.1.x to 1.5

    Great job guys, you made my experience with mac more enjoyable.

  14. David says:

    Hi again,
    Forklift 1.5b2 seems to copy files instead of moving them (from FAT32 USB Stick to local HD). Same when moving from one disk partition to another.
    Any reason for this? When I select move (or press F6), I expect it to be “move”, not copy.
    Cheers … David

  15. David says:

    add on to Goran (13):

    - I never get an authentication dialoge, although I get them when I do the same things in Finder. Why cold this be this?
    - I’d also prefer 2 separate tab holders.

  16. [...] Anyway, I moved to Transmit and I’ve been pretty happy with it, but it just seems to be lacking for me.  This brings me to Forklift 1.5 beta 2. [...]

  17. ImreSz says:

    I just bought ForkLift, and all I can say…its superb!! (1.5b2)

    Thanks Binarynights! :)

    ImreSz

  18. Chris says:

    Seems pretty good but I can’t seem to get Quick Look anywhere. Is this a bug or an unimplemented feature?

    Chris

  19. csaba says:

    @Santiago
    Thanks for your comments. We have been giving some thought to allowing custom items in the context menu, but it is quite a complex issue, and we have put it away for the time being.

    The same applies to default paths on FTP shortcuts, though we think we will be able to squeeze this into the final 1.5. at least, we’re working on that.

    @HeroP
    Sorry, but it’s unlikely we’ll be able to have QuickLook on remote folders ever. We must admit the QuickLook feature in ForkLift uses kind of a garage hack, and we don’t believe we’ll be able to do better.

    @Oli
    Synch browsing works this way: once you navigate your right and left folders to two folders that are more or less the same (say your a work folder and it’s live copy on a remote server) you can switch on Synch Browsing and FL will try to follow the navigation in one panel with the other one. So if you open the ‘disco’ folder in one panel, FL will open the same folder in the other panel, if there is one.

    I hope this helps.

    @Goran
    Sorry, but we’ll be unable to program this, as the behavior you described results from the fact that FL has to go through Finder for all Thrash operations, and the behavior of the focus cannot be controlled.

    @David
    The move/copy error is caused by a bug in Apple’s copy engine. It will be fixed when Apple fixes the API we use.

    @Chris
    QuickLook will work on local files and folders. It is activated by hitting space, or clicking the QuickLook icon in the toolbar.

    ======

    Oh, and some good news. Mudi just finished coding font selection to FL’s main panels, so you’ll be able to set custom font and font size. The feature will be available from the next release.

    Thanks for the beta testers’ continued activity

    Take care

    BinaryNights

  20. Chris says:

    Santiago,
    Thanks. It sure did improve a lot when I downloaded the beta (I was using 1.2!) :)

  21. nate beaty says:

    new beta is much more stable, i haven’t gotten it to crash yet (i stopped using old beta pretty quickly w/ the remote edit crash killing it every 5 mins).

    couldn’t get a shared drive to work w/ authentication, but so far everything else works great.

  22. As a long time Total Commander user, I welcome Forklift as a great app. I have a couple of questions, suggestions:
    1. Can we have a sync tool to compare folders, subfolders by content, by file extension, etc. That will be a great addition and make the program very cost effective for people needing separate apps to do syncing.
    2. Can you make the calculate folder size work recursively on all folders of the selected pane? Also can you pt the shortcut on the toolbar?
    3. I think F6 (move) does not remove original location if on a different volume.
    4. How can we get bigger fonts and customize cursor selection, etc.? At least a bigger font size.

    So for now. Keep work on a grat app.!

  23. Thanks for fixing some of the bugs in 1.5b2, however some of them are still there.
    Please fix at least PageUp/Down (Fn+ArrowUp/Down) focus scrolling on MBP and showing Network drives in DEVICES (mounted) list for upcoming release, coz this is really huge annoyance.
    And I would be very grateful also for those 5 keyboard shortcut features, this would really simply the development.

    BUGS:
    - Network drives are NOT shown in devices (mounted) list (I need to manually go to /Volumes to access them)
    - No shares are shown for SHARED computers (items), while this works OK in Finder
    – PageUp/Down (Fn+ArrowUp/Down) on MacBook scrolls the window by one page but doesn’t move the selection focus (while it should), also Cmd+Up/Down should IMHO got to beginning/end of the list (very annoying for navigation, PLEASE FIX IT, this really makes MBP browsing a hell)
    - Seems that some files are still copied instead of being moved when I request Move operation (quote serious bug)
    - When I do rename for file that has no extension, all name should be highlighted for edition, while it is not highlighted at all, while in case of file with extension, edition highlight goes to filename part w-o extension (which if fine)
    – When I press Opt+Cmd+F for spotlight search, then I Tab to the results, then I press Delete to escape results I don’t get to former pane folder but its parent folder
    – No way to rename favorite pointing to local path (Why? If I’m pointing to /MyTools/bin & /Other/bin, my favorites will be both “bin”, but I want to rename them in order to know which’s which)
    – When I calculated folder size in the list, then I remove other folder or copy file into the pane folder, the folder size is removed while it should stay untouched if the file operation isn’t relative to size calculated one (does not change its content)
    – Calculate folder size should invalidate sort by size after it is done, try to sort by size, then select all and calculate size, order doesn’t change while it IMHO should
    - Cmd+I Spotlight meta-data fields are almost all shirked and not displayed completely because of lack of horizontal space, this really makes them unreadable
    FEATURES:
    – Shortcut: (Opt+Cmd+ArrowLeft/ArrowRight) Open focused folder in opposite (selected by arrow) pane
    – Shortcut: (Opt+1…9) Sort using field, Opt+1 for name, Opt+1 again for name desc, Opt+3 for size, etc.
    – Shortcut: (Opt+Cmd+C) Copy selected file path (hell useful)
    – Shortcut: (Opt+Cmd+S) Calculate size of all folders in the list
    - Shortcut: (Shift+Cmd+T) Open current folder in terminal (This would be very useful for administrators)
    – Connect to server using Samba/CIFS, NFS and AFP like in Finder Cmd+F (this is really crucial for administrators, I need to switch Finder every time I want to do it)
    – Also let SMB, NFS, AFP connections be added to favorites (and when path is already mounted, cd to it not mount it again)
    – An option to specify font size for the list? (Those fonts are bit too small for me)
    – Way to clone headers size or order in one pane to 2nd pane, way to move divider back to exactly 50%
    – Allow to modify file extended attributes in File Info (Cmd+I) such as Invisible, Hide Extension, .. etc (as in SetFile command)
    – Allow to modify existing archives, so files can be copied into them, renamed, as they were normal folders (I know this isn’t easy)
    – An option to explicitly set a displayed file size unit to one of: byte, KB, MB, instead of using scalable display
    - Show Finders custom (More) menus for item context menu in Forklift, so for example I got SVN scplugin.tigris.org that gives Subversion menu in finder, I wish that menu was shown also in Forklift + can we have keyboard shortcut for context menu?

    Many thanks for all the work done!

  24. csaba says:

    @Manuel
    1. As discussed in earlier posts, the synch tool is our next development target. no ETAs as yet, but we will be working on that after the final 1.5 is released.
    2. The folder size issue was also discussed earlier. It’s tricky, and we may come back to it later, but it’s not a priority for the moment.
    3. Yes, this is a bug in the OS X API, so it’s up to the Leopard people to fix it.
    4. The issue of LARGER FONTS has been brought up by many users, and Mudi has just implemented custom font and font size in the panel, so the feature will be available in the next release.

    @Adam
    Thanks for the input, as usual. The Network/Share issue is giving us some hard time, Attila is in the process of going through the code.
    We will reconsider your suggestions on keyboard workflow.

    Good day to all

  25. Jan Willem Schoonhoven says:

    In addition to Manuel Alonso I would also like to see a compare file bij content.
    So you can compare, for example, the content of a file on the webserver and the file on your local harddrive.
    This function I use a lot with Total Commander.
    If this would be possible I don’t have to use my PC anymore!

  26. Maccer says:

    I am waiting for the final version before I upgrade, but I wonder one thing: is it possible to edit favourites? In 1.2 I can’t find a way to do it, and it is quite annoying.

    My main two other reasons for using Cyberdyck, namely
    - much faster FTP transfer speeds and
    - the possiblilty to browse while transferring files
    seem to be fixed in FL 1.5 since it now uses multiple FTP connections.

  27. Tim says:

    I really like this version. I agree with the requests regarding tabs and font sizes. Can you also make the sidebar icon sizes adjustable? As I get older (much older), larger icons are very helpful. Thanks.

  28. csaba says:

    @Jan Willem
    Yes, this is the file synchronization feature we have discussed earlier, as one of our priority dev projects.

    @Maccer
    Yes, editing favorites seems to be working fine in the betas, and it will be part of the 1.5 release.

    @Tim
    We’ve already implemented font and font size selection in the panels. We will probably get to the sidebar in the near future.

    FL BETA PEOPLE
    As you know, the Leopard upgrade was released, and we are highly interested to know how (if) this affects ForkLift. Please keep a sharp eye out for bugs, and keep us posted.

    For now, good night

    BinaryNights crew

  29. Tim says:

    I appreciate your fast responses and your openness to suggestions. The current beta has been fine so far on my MacBook Pro with 10.5.2.

  30. Mike says:

    Can you please bring us back the previous icon? The new one is dark, sharp and definitely *un*sweet. Thanks!

  31. Tim says:

    I just noticed one possible glitch in the Quick Look feature. With Excel, it will show different tabs, but if you click on the different tabs, it does not switch to the new tab. The Finder’s Quick Look does allow for this.

  32. Yeah, I confirm the new icon is pretty but bit dark on the Dock. I’d just suggest making it little lighter, so the fork-lift black (dark-gray) bars are slightly lighter, coz now they’re invisible on my right placed Leopard dock that has similar almost dark background -> I can just see the body of fork-lift and wheel caps :>

    I’d also note that home/end (MB fn+left/right) should move the highlight too in the list, no just scroll, this also applies to pgup/pgdown (MB fn+up/down) that is only scrolling the list w-o moving the highlight that I’ve already reported.

  33. Frederik says:

    hi! one issue that i think is quite important:

    if you move files to the trashcan using command-del, there’s no warning. that’s okay for local files, but on network shares, these files are deleted instantaneously and you can’t recover them if you accidentally delete them… so please: let the user confirm any delete actions on shares! otherwise: great app!

  34. Patrick says:

    What a great product!!!
    Is there any way to make a third pane in FL?
    I want to see my HD in 1, Server Partition#1 in 2, Server Partition#2 in 3.
    If that makes any sense?
    Maybe a Hack?

  35. ming says:

    Dear Forklift team,

    nice work! I’m sure the final release will be great and i won’t regret spending money on it. Still i have to switch back to Finder pretty often due to some major problems, which have been mentioned in other post before. I want to emphasize them again:

    …………………..

    1) No shared folders are displayed when clicking on network computers, “connect as” Button doesn’t work at all

    2) No way to mount network drives (Apple + K in Finder), network drives should be listed in drive panel

    3) Moving Files/Folders is not possible. You always have to do the job twice: copy, then remove

    …………………..

    I will post my wishlist seperately. Keep it up!

  36. Lohness says:

    Nice Site! Thanks!

  37. Arjan Terol says:

    Love the new version, but I would like to see one new feature:

    - navigator buttons for both windows (like in Transmit). I find it annoying that I first have to make the window active to use the buttons.

    Thanks.
